How can I diagnose & fix my slow Dvd Burner?

I have a 16X DVD-RW drive that takes about an hour to burn and verify a 4GB 8X DVD-R disc. I’m told this is a lot slower than it should be, but I’m not sure how to track down the bottleneck. When the burn process starts, Nero estimates around 7-8 minutes to burn the disc, but it ends up taking 30 minutes or so, then another 30 to verify. I tried replacing the cables running to both the Hard Drives and the Dvd Drives, but the speed didn’t seem to improve at all.

For what it’s worth, I have two hard drives on one cable. The burner and a non-burner Dvd Drive are on the other cable. The machine is one I built from parts and it has 1GB of memory and it’s running Windows 2000.

So, what can I do to track down the cause of the slowness?

Nero CD-DVD Speed reports that the drive is running at just over 1X.

first,depends on the method you are burning disc-if you`r doing an “on the fly” check with nero toolkit>info tool how much buffer memory is installed on your drives (dvd|dvd-rw) if your dvd-rom has an 256kb buffer you can not burn dvd`s with speed more then 4X-and that`s about 15 minutes for full 4.3Gb disc-2.dont verify-you can verify it yourself (after burning just put your disc in the dvd rom and if it plays-it`s ok)3.if your burning data from hdd than you should change the connections on your mainboard and drives also,put the boot hdd as master on primary ide and the dvd-rw as a slave on it to,second hdd put as master on secondary and dvd rom as slave on same ….and so on…also try uninstall the nero and install it again,or using another burning program (uninstall nero firs than install another program),also check this,go to my computer>right click>hardware>device manager>>double click the ide controller>right click the primary channel>a new window will open>click advanced tab>look if your hdd`s are set to “ultra dma” if yes dot touch anything if no (if “pio mode” than clikc dropdown list and select “dma”) press “ok”repeat the step for second channel (if the drives set to piu mode-than change to dma )that should solve the problem….
